Bird friendly netting
« on: June 24, 2019, 17:02 »
Hi everyone - just looking to buy some netting/mesh that won't cost me a fortune. It's to keep birds off my cherry tree which has grown too big now to cover with previous mesh I had. I don't want anything that catches the birds in obviously but just wondered if anyone had any suggestions. I normall try to make an umbrella like structure with poles banged into ground around the tree and then throw mesh over it which I peg together. This has worked fine but tree is now too big for that. Is there any netting I could use which sort of drapes over. I'm not too fond of stuff I have stored in shed as it's a nightmare to handle and sticks together.
Really appreciate any suggestions.
p.s. Tree isn't enormous - about 12' at highest point at a guess.

net curtain material?

Thanks but tree is way too big now for curtains. I've got a whole stack of them but they are only half nets so too small.

Could you sew the nets together? Or enviromesh but it’s pricey.

Once trees get this big it is difficult to net them securely. I find that making "sleeves" out of net curtain material or similar, that can be slipped over aa branch and secured to and bottom to be very effective. Lots of people on our site do this now, and it does work, with cherries continuing to ripen inside.  You just need to decide how many branches-worth you are going to harvest, and how may are for the birds  :D :D :D
