Bird-friendly slug pellets?
« on: March 23, 2012, 07:26 »
Hi folks

I'd like to know if there is an organic way to rid myself (even only partially) of slugs on my plot? I dont want to use slug pellets unless there is a brand out there that is friendly to local wildlife such as the birds. I don't want to use beer as I don't drink alcohol (so neither should the slugs, darn the blighters)  :tongue2:. I'd like to feed the dead slugs to the birds once they've kicked the bucket, so to speak.

Any advice most warmly welcomed.  :)

Mandy

There's quite a lot out there.

Google "Organic slug pellets".

Here's one:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could use normal pellets but put them inside a plastic bottle laid on its side with an I shaped slit cut in the top with the flaps pushed down into the bottle.
This lets the slug in but stops the birds from reaching the died slugs and also stops the pellets coming in cotact with your soil.

A plastic cup half full of beer with an old plate or slate propped over it (to keep out the rain) is as good a slug trap as you will ever find.

Sink the cup not quite to the rim in the soil.

I have caught at least a hundred young slugs already in a couple of weeks - with three of these traps.
what is nice about these is you can see them working!

Also, I have some Growing Success pellets - no danger to pets, birds, children, careless gardeners.

You'll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind.

There used to be a 'wildlife friendly' powder called Fertosan.  I believe taken off the market, but there may be a replacement on the shelves.       Cheers,     Tony.

The OP said that she would not use beer traps. ::)

The so-called organic slug pellets are not poisonous to other animals but I still wouldn't feed the "victims" to birds (you may find it difficult to find them anyway as the ferric phosphate versions don't poison the slugs directly as metaldehyde does.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have just bought Advanced Slug Killer from Homebase. It has a good writeup on the internet.

I use various soft drinks when they're on special at the supermarket. They work just as good as beer, in my experience, and a heck of a lot cheaper! :)

Wow, thanks for your replies folks!  :). Will consider the soft drink option and look up the organic options to see which would work best on our plot. Shame for the slippery slime balls to be disposed of when they could feed our feathered friends (minus the flying rats of course ).

You peeps are the best! :-)

Thanks again. Mandy
