Gooseberry advice
« on: July 21, 2012, 07:59 »
Some gooseberry advice would be welcome. Haven't done goosies before.

Have some goosegog plants in pots waiting to  be put on the plot in the Autumn.

Saw this morning that a lot of the leaves have been stripped. :(

Checked for gooseberry saw fly but there was no signs.

Have put slug pellets down in case that is the cause.
If it was sawfly what precautions/sprays etc could I use.

Thanks.

Doubt it is slugs as the thorns on the goosegog stems should deter them. If it is the dreaded sawfly you should be able to spot the caterpillar's. They are 20mm long . Pick them off by hand or spray with Provado ultimate bug killer.

Thanks for the Provado advice Fatcat.

I did have a really good look for the caterpillars and couldn't find any.

But will get the provado spray and blast to be on the safe side while I still have leaves left.

It is a right game this year, we are beset on all sides :(

Caterpillars tend to be well camouflaged with the exact shade of green as the leaves
