Gooseberry Advice
« on: October 03, 2009, 15:21 »
My wife has asked me to grow her some goosberrys , so im currently  looking for a bush.

Any advice at all on varietys, how to grow and even best place to buy a nice one would be well appreciated  :)

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Two colours: White and Red and then it is Desert or Culinary.
As gooseberries are seemingly expected to be white here goes:
Whites:
Early Sulpher:
Jubilee:
Langley Cage:
Whitesmith:

Reds:
Lord Derby:
May Duke:

The above is simply a list from one book in which I could read no problems then removed those that in the second book said problems. Mainly mildew susceptibility.

I have 2 gooseberries and they are half standards. Makes it easy to pick, crop may be lower but I get enough.

If your ground is heavy then you may need to select one for heavy ground as they seem to dislike it.

Pick modern varieties that are resistant to American mildew. Older varieties such as careless are now outdated. Avoid seedlings found growing in the corner of aunties garden. Also those grown from cuttings unless you know the variety.

Older bushes with a good 6 inch stem to keep them off the ground are more expensive but well worth they start the give in training a good shaped bush.

Invicta is vigorous and high yielding for green tart fruit. Hinnonmaki is a yellow dessert variety with a hint of aprict flavour.

Just Googled 'Gooseberry Leveller' and there are a few online sellers, but postage seems quite high :( You are probably better off waiting for the winter planting season and looking in local garden centres. You can plant anytime up till March so no hurry :)
