Broad Beans, idiosyncratic or horticultural
« on: July 22, 2012, 18:54 »
Does anyone know why some pods are almost or totally empty yet others on the same plant are completely full? Is it an idiosyncrasy of the plant or can it be avoided?

It is the result of good /incomplete/no fertilisation of the flower

The plant makes pods regardless of their content, and is not dependent on cultivar

Hope that helps

If its an idiosyncrasy then it could also be a foible.

Thank you Sunshine. I suppose it's obvious when you think about it. What was throwing me was that in a cluster of, say four pods, half were OK and the other half were empty

This year has been better than last here -- I think it is to do with the warm dry weather much earlier in the year which encouraged insects out.
