Everlasting Cauliflowers anyone?
« on: September 14, 2008, 13:05 »
I'm looking around to see what I can plant or sow in spare raised beds in September/October onwards.

I came across this advertisement on back of Smallholder magazine for a company called Victoriana Nursery Gardens in which they have for sale a number of plants/seeds which they claim can be sewn or planted out now.

Everlasting perennial cauliflower plants (not cheap) 5 plants for £6.25 or 10 plants for £11.50.

Hardy peas (Douce Provence) 200 seeds £4.95

Carrots 2000 £2.60

Broad Beans (Bunyards) 100 seeds £3.85

Anyone grown the cauli's - which I have not heard of before? They claim they last for 5 years and can grow up to 10 or more heads per plant per year (small tennis ball size) which would suit us perfectly.

And do you think other veg would be good to plant or sow now as well?

Thanks - as always for any advice.

I've heard of everlasting cauli's but never grown them.
To be honest I think their seed prices a little high
Some nursery sell broad bean seeds loose I got mine (Bunyards Exhibition ) 2oz for 59p about 50+ seeds I think.

Yes, I agree about the prices.

I have seen this website recommended on another gardening forum for price and quality.

http://www.seeds-by-size.co.uk

They seem to be very reasonable.

If I had no clubroot, I might be toiling with the thought, but really don't like the idea of perennial brassica plants from a rotational/disease point of view.

Yes good point about rotation Gobs, never thought of that. Although I do have a space I could just tuck them in on their own if they produce good small heads of cauli.
We do like cauliflower and was looking for something to grow during the bleak Autumn/winter period and apart from having purple spouting broccolli in - the beds will be a bit bare. Even they are looking a bit ragged as the caterpillers virtually wiped them out and I'm just hoping they will pick up.

On my other point is there anything else we could put in now?

Going to order some onion sets and garllic and possibly put few more Broad Beans in.

What sort of tub is best for growing some potatoes in for Christmas...or is that a waste of time?
