Mildewed peas...not a disaster

Well I was about to just pull up all my hideous looking 2nd crop peas today which were absolutely covered in mildew pods and all.

I opened a few pods and to my amazement the peas were perfectly OK.

So If you have a similar looking awful crop just pod a few and you'll be amazed.....they're OK.

I'm not expecting many more but these were a bonus.

Have a look at the pod,it looks awful but the peas were fine.

I had that last year and still ate them (not thinking that they could have been affected :roll: ) and mine were fine.

I'm surprised at them having mildew though; isn't that caused when there's not enough moisture in the air?? :shock:

As a first-timer I just pulled all my rotting broad bean plants having had about 10 pods in all, the peas are now going mildewy too, damn. They were sown quite late though - mid-July. For next year I'm going to pull down the hedges on the western side, it's all on my land, to let more sun in.

I know what you're saying Soozi.

I don't beleive the books that say keep the soil moist etc.

I'd have thought all moulds etc need moisture :?

It's not stopped raining here for 2 months and my soil's never dried out. :?

I get powdery mildew on my courgettes too every year in my polytunnel and It's always humid in there :?

Who knows

I planted some peas in containers and some in the garden. They have all been affected by mildew but the ones in the containers seem to have been worse affected. More of them came through and were much closer together than those in the garden.

I found the peas were fine inside the pods, though a lot of pods seemed smaller and flowers that started to turn into pods seemed to just die off once the mildew had taken hold. At least i still got some peas though.

Hurst Greenshaft.

And they're supposed to be mildew resistant. :? :?

It was Hurst Greenshaft that I also grew. The plants got so covered in mildew that I pulled them out 3 weeks ago! I did strip off all the pods though and the peas were fine.
