Asparagus & earthing up

Can anyone tell me when is it time to stop earthing up asparagus.

As far as i'm aware you only earth up to whiten the stalks for cutting, if you prefer white shoots to the normal green. That would mean that as you stop cutting you stop earthing up, if you see what i mean.
