Pickling Onions in Gutter?
« on: June 04, 2008, 16:23 »
Hi,

I've bought some silverskin pickling onions, which I'm desperate to plant out (I just love pickled onions!), but at the moment have no space. I do have some old large guttering on my lottie and was wondering as the onions are rather small, if they could be planted in the guttering?

Cheers,

Well guttering is novel to say the least. Don't see offhand it would be much of a problem, as they are quite small rooting onions, aren't they. :?

Go for it. If it works you can always do it again, if it doesn't then???

Well guttering works brilliantly for my peas before I slide them into the ground.  So I'd think the onions should do Ok, would it just be for a temporary place to get them going before transplanting ?

Tip: line the guttering with a bit of polythene to make it easier to slide the soil out into it's trench !

Hi Aunty Sally,

Well I was thinking about keeping them in there till they could be picked as the guttering is quite deep, but not 100% sure what'd be best, as I think it'll be late July till August untill I have time to clear another patch of my allotment to get them in the ground and I don't want to leave them too late to go in.

Any help/advice would be appreciated

Cheers,
Arls

As long as they are kept moist and fed they should be fine.  Make sure they don't dry right out in the sun though !
