pickling onions

hi all,

ive been given a sack of onions that I believe were intended to be pickles before Christmas,, now some have started to sprout and form roots.. i can pickle them but was wondering what i would get if i planted them... would they just grow to go to seed or would i get some decent sized onions off them??

This will be their second year - therefore flowers & seed, I'm afraid.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
