Onions for pickling

Afternoon all,

lf l am sowing Ailsa Graig to use as pickling onions when is the best time to sow them outdoors?
l know they have to be quite close, about 2", any other tip much appriciated.

Red Sun Shallots make great pickling onions.
They keep well if some are saved to grow again the following season.
They are the only ones we now use.

I only pickle the long shaped shallots now,they are a bit more expensive but pickle very well nice and crunchy.

I also use red sun shallots. They are super crunchy and have a great flavour too!!

Sorry to threadbut but can you give me some advice about growing onions for pickling?  Do I do it from seed or sets?  I have never doen this before but would love to try.  My family love pickled onions.

Paris Siverskin is grown from seeds sown in March
Shallots, like the Red Sun mentioned above, are usually grown from sets planted from December to March ;)
