Porridge Oats
« on: November 10, 2010, 14:24 »
Just bought my girls some porridge oats & made them a runny mix up in the microwave.
Added more cold water & left it for a few minutes to cool.
Gave it to them & they just looked at it & me.
I stuck my finger in & had some & they stood & watched me  :D

Stuck my finger in again & held it out to them which they pecked at.

It was a free for all  ::)  Never thought they would go mad over it - they love it  :D

Plan is to give them a small amount in the mornings now it is colder - but is it ok to give them this every morning or maybe 2-3 time a week?

Personally I would give it to them in the evening after they have filled up on their layers pellets.... otherwise they may not eat enough of the good stuff and then the eggs would suffer :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I see what you are saying. It might be better later on in the afternoon!

Just tested today to see if they liked it.

mine have it in the mornings when the ground is frozen - it tempts them out of their coops  :D.
Make sure it is made with water only though and not milk.

Mine go absolutly nuts over porridge, OH she has it every morning and leaves a little left over for the girls. I also give it to them just before coop time.

Give it to the 2 bantams and they just look at you - as if to say what the %^$& is this, but give them cauliflower and they go nuts

Strange creatures   :tongue2:

The chooks have porridge when i do , it`s ok to give it to them in morning as long as you do not give them very much . They are quite happy with a warm layer pellet mash which will be better for a balanced diet. :)
Weetabix is a favourite too but they only get the last crumbs from the packet.

we just add some hot water to pellets, sometimes add a bit of marmite to the hot water, that way they are eating just what the should, chicken pellets, but they think it is a treat

I have to make 5 bowls of porridge, 2 for the dogs, one each for me and hubby and 1 big bowl for the girls.  They love it, and I give it to them just a couple of times a week, I mix in some chicken tonic and cod liver oil as well, it's a good way to get extra vitamins into them.  alison

The first time i ever gave porridge to my girls they were a bit cautious but once they had tasted it they walloped it back! Now every time i come out with the container and the spoon stirring they know exactly what they're getting, they try to peck at it before it even touches the floor.

This morning Mildred trod in it and then walked into a pile of leaves after, it looked like she was wearing a pair of lumpy leafy snow shoes!

Mine had porridge for the first time this morning, although my chicks ( nearly adults) did not get a look in... poor things, they will soon be the biggest in the there so they will get their own back!

ooh, never tried porridge with my girls - must put some on my shopping list!  Hubby complains I treat them better than I treat him!  I said to him that if he starts to lay eggs he can have whatever he wants  too :)
