Can you give chookies porridge oats?
« on: June 12, 2010, 10:08 »
Reason Im asking is because Ive been happily mixing a nice mash in the evenings of fresh cooked veg, garlic and porridge oats.
The girls love it.
Last night a friend of mine with four battery hens said his girl had a blocked crop and it was mainly due to porridge, the Vet said its not good to give it to hens-equally bread.

Ive been giving both!

Help, what do you feed, are porridge oats really bad,my book says No!

 :(

I read that in the winter they love some warm porridge.
I was going to give mine this as a treat this winter.
It might be the amount you give as it swells when it is mixed with liquid.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge & experience can properly answer this

In winter and only when it is frosty or snowy I make porridge up with oats and water they have it quite runny to prevent it swelling up. Dry bread is bad for them as like Craig says it swells up in their crop.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Due to my 2 rhode island reds being underweight when I first got them I have been making them runny porridge to try and build them up and they love it.  :)  Having had them 2 weeks I will now cut down the times in which I give them it, and now treat them once in a while.  When the dreaded winter comes along I will give them it more often.

Porridge oats are OK in small amounts as long as they are cooked.  Problems arise when hens eat raw porridge and it swells in their crop.

Ours love porridge on cold days too, as a yummy treat and the best way to fix a stodgy crop - we feed ours white maggots.  They eat any blockage and the chooks love them!! (must be white tho as the coloured ones are poisonous)
