I give mine warm porridge for their afternoon snack, and I add cod liver oil once a week or so. Just a drop each  :)

I give my girls (and boys) porridge in the afternoon just before coop time, it fetches them in from the field at a run, little legs pedalling as fast as they can wings flapping leaping over the wall. quite a site to see. They recognise the bucket and spoon well now and stand or perch on it to get there fiorst. I mix in any leftovers they are to have, codliver oil and garlic capsules.  Just one point though I do use spare milk if Ihave it or yogurt. Is that not a good idea?

I give mine a porridge/layers pellets mix with some dried mixed herbs in when it's frosty.  They love it.  Will try putting some cod liver oil in too.  Good idea.

I was thinking the same but wondering how the eggs would taste in cakes. If you bake as often as I do though, then you've no need to worry! :D

Haven't noticed any difference in the eggs as Lily is  broody and Rosie has never laid anything yet.  Not an egg in sight at the moment.  The dried mix is from Aldi and has lavender in it too so should be cake friendly!

ooh, never tried porridge with my girls - must put some on my shopping list!  Hubby complains I treat them better than I treat him!  I said to him that if he starts to lay eggs he can have whatever he wants  too :)

If your hubby started to lay eggs you could charge people to see him.  He would be worth his weight in gold!

Been giving the girls porridge in the morning for the last 4 days now & they love it :D
They are still eating their layers mash & treated them to some left over cabbage after i cleaned them out earlier on.
Is there a cod liver oil especially for hens or can i use the stuff we use?
Only asking as i was told that i needed one that was made for animals when giving it to my dog!
Don't understand why unless something else is added to the oil we have.

Hi Craig

I'm not sure if there are different types or grades of cod liver oil though, for example, when talking about apple cider vinegar and garlic powder people say you should get the types that are suitable for horses (I think they are less refined). I actually did get my cod liver oil from a farm supplies shop. The producer is NAF and as it comes in larger quantities than you would get from a supermarket you may find it is cheaper that way particularly if you have a large flock of hens. Hope this helps

never thought of porridge-will give it a go at the weekend!  do you just heat it up and give it to them hot or cool it down first?

I heat it up for about a minute in the microwave, then cool & water it down with cold water.
Mix it with water & NOT milk!
