Another poor showing...
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:55 »
I dug my spring onions up yesterday (the packet said leeks ???!) as they have got to a stage where they wont get any bigger, the intersting part which did suprise me was there was no new roots.
I have always trimmed the roots of my leeks but these have not grown any new ones form March when they went in, that has suprsied me somewhat, never have I experienced that before.

This is weird Aidy.  I just pulled up some of my leeks as they didn't seem to be thickening up and they have 1" bulbs at the bottom.  Don't know if this is normal for leeks as I've never grown them before?

It sounds like your leeks may have been Aidy's spring onions! :)

Only a thought, but with the amount of rain we have had maybe they didn't need to put out extra?

Never seen or heard of anything like that before. Although this years crop is going to be well down in terms of bulk I do actually have usable leeks...and with plenty of roots.

If you dip the young leek plants in water before popping into the planting hole there's usually no need to trim the roots as they stick together like a rope and are much easier to handle.

I suspect that the rain washed out any feed we may have put in the soil and left us with weedy leeks.

I think the "too much water so no need for extra roots" theory is probably a viable one.

Anything below ground this year from about June onwards has been very poor and we are seeing things this year that in all my years have never seen before.
Roll on New Year (unless thats banned too  :D)

We have been digging new dykes around the site this week so hopefully that will help the drainage issue.

Hmm a little less rain might also help the drainage issue.
