Cheapest place for green manure?
« on: September 18, 2012, 17:36 »
I am going to do a plot full of green manure soon, does anyone know some cheap places for green manures?  I have just been looking on "sowseeds" for 1kg, they want £20 (incl delivery) for 1kg winter mix.  Maybe I am being tight, but I thought it was a bit O.T.T lol.
This is my Allotment, There are many like it, but this one is mine. Without my Allotment I am nothing, without me, my Allotment is nothing

Depends on which manure you're after?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I bought birdsfoot trefoil seeds from eBay last year - Premier Seeds Direct , in fact. They're always very reasonable, good quality and good price. :)

I'm just after something for the winter, their winter mix consists of: Crimson Clover, Mustard, Red Clover, Italian Ryegrass.  Thanks arugula, and potty, I will be sure to have a look in a minute :)

Moles seems to be about the cheapest, £17 incl delivery for 1kg winter mix.  Thanks for the suggestions, trefoil does not look like it produces a huge amount of foliage like the clovers and mustards.  So I think the winter mix is the 1 for me :o)

No I must confess I have not seen it, but will take a look.  There is so much on this site, I tend to get lost if I go off the forum part lol.  Thanks, I will take a look :)

That looks good also surbie100 thanks for the suggestion, but in the notes it mentions about protecting the small seedlings from pigeons.  I can't protect them, and we have loads of pigeons around our allotments so I think that could be a none starter.  I really need to invest in an air rifle  :D

It's not the same mix as the OP was looking at, though.

A mix similar to what you describe costs £13.20 inc postage from Moles.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Buckwheat is another good green manure (not sure whether you can sow at this time of year or not). Bought a huge bag from the wholefood shop, grew fine. Might try mustard seeds from there next! :)

John's article, mentioned in reply #6, tells you. ;)

I've just ordered some seed from here,

https://www.cotswoldseeds.com/seedmix/green-manures

They seem very cheap (under £1 / kg for one type) even after postage is factored in,
