Cauliflowers like brocoli
« on: August 28, 2012, 18:24 »
This is my first year in my new allottment plot I have put at the bottom of the garden. I grew some cauliflowers, (theyre still in). But when i looked at them, they looked a bit more like brocoli than cauliflower. The heads are still firm and in shape but there isnt much underneath, no side growths making that round ball shape. My leaves are't curling around the head either (although I've only just learned I should tie the leaves over the top). My question is, is it still too early for them and should I leave them longer or should I lift them ?

If they have opened out like that it is only a very short time before the flowers open, I am sorry to say.

Cut them quickly and at least you'll have something edible

They're not open, they are stilll tight, but but if i were to cut them down, I'd have a brocoli shaped head rather than a ball, which often has curled leaves around it. I'm wondering if the shape will change with new head growth or whether thats it, and I should cut them?

No the shape won't change now

If the stalks are growing apart they are poised to burst into bright yellow flowers

That happened to my 3 romanescu too.  I cut them all up into florets and we are gradually getting through them.

OH said, are they still okay to eat?  Silly man, of course they are.  Like your cauliflowers they have separated a bit, but nowhere near the flowering stage.
