mini sweet corn ?
« on: August 17, 2012, 10:42 »
I have grown this for the first time this year and the whole plant looks just like my regular sweet corn (except the "tassels" are red) I am guessing when I open the leaves of the cob I will find several mini cobs instead of one big one ??
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I don't think so, the wrappers will only be around one cob each,  but the kernals may be red ? ! ? !  Keep us informed with a picture.

Cheers,    Tony.

Hi Starry,

We're growing 'Minipop' sweetcorn for the first time (never tried the standard variety). We've got eight plants, with about three cobs on each.

Harvested some last night - only one mini cob inside each one, but they looked and tasted great.  No red kernals though......

Have heard/read that you shouldn't leave the cobs on the plant too long, as they don't need pollinating like regular cobs. One book says to pick before the tassels even form, but we weren't on the ball enough for that!

Yep. We have it here again this year, only one per wrapper. ;) Should be ready soon. :D

Had the Sister in law's sprogs (one of each) for a couple of days and sweetcorn is her favourite, his is broccoli ! !  Anyway, I picked a cob peeled it and had it in hot water in seconds to see if what they say is true about 'the fresher the better' and it is correct.

I borrowed a couple of kernals from her plate and I've never had so sweet sweetcorn.

Cheers,    Tony.

We have one on one of the plants today with about 10 mm of tassel poking out of the top. It will probably be ready tomorrow, hopefully with a few others, as that is one problem we found last year - they seemed to like to ripen singly. ::)

I picked three this morning. A lovely addition to stir fry.
Each plant seem to be developing 3 cobs-looking forward to more.   :)

Tony, my late dad was a maize (larger than sweetcorn and white) farmer amongst other things and always joked with us that if we tripped on the way back from the field after picking some we were to go back for more as they would be too old and tough... how right he was..
