advice on "anaemic" carrots
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:35 »
Hi everyone, greetings from the cold east coast  :D

Have just pulled up the last of my late sown Parmex carrots - surprisingly they were a good size after being planted in late July as an experiment...result!

They were rather pale in colour though - something that's always the case with my carrots.  Have I just got over used to supermarket carrots being almost luminous or could I be doing more to make mine colour up?

I may be going about this all wrong...

I usually dig in compost before planting and then give them some granular feed but nothing regular (poor neglected carrots....) - I'm new to allotmenting and have moved in the last year so both times have inherited plots at what seemed like an inappropriate time to manure a roots bed (i.e. in the season before planting).

Could anyone suggest some top carrot tips?
On the upside mini pale carrots tasted so much better than the Asda ones!

Thanks
Vicky

So seems the late planting and the wet summer might well contribute, but then carrots come in so many shades and colours. I do not know your variety, so cannot say it's colour, but Check here

Thanks Gobs and Munty

Your link says they should be " a deep orange colour"...hmmmm.
I may have carrot envy....

Will try the sulphate of potash next time Munty, thanks very much for the advice!

Well worth trying Munty's advice, Vicky, Well actually I just remembered I grew some of them    , this stump rooted things, aren't they?

Orange all right, strong as well. But do also try for better drainage, like a raised frame or tub.
