marking eggs with graphite pencil
« on: July 09, 2012, 13:48 »
I had a conversation recently with someone who keeps chickens and he says that he never marks his eggs with graphite pencil because it could poison the chicks.  Has anyone else been told this?  I regularly mark the date on mine in pencil so I can keep a track.
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

is this for when they go into an manual turn incubator or just for in your kitchen?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I do put some in a manual turn incubator but most are for us to eat.

then no need to mark them if they are to eat - I use an egg skelter so the oldest one is always at the bottom  :D
this is what I am on about  :)

Nearly every breeder I know uses graphite pencils on their eggs; and these breeders win classes at the National and the Federation.

I know some people use china graph markers, and I also know some people use felt tips (though I wouldn't personally)

I also use graphite on my eating eggs.

I don't think I've poisoned a chick yet :)
