Marking eggs with a date
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:42 »
I'd like to date my eggs so I can be sure I'm using the old ones up first.  what's the best thing to mark them with I've been thinking about getting a date stamp from the stationary shop will the ink be ok or would chalk be better? I'm guessing a marker is a no no. what do other people use ? the eggs I buy in the shop have been stamped with red ink is this special ink i can buy ???

I use a date stamp and ink pad from a office retail store, the ink is non toxic plus you can get top up bottles should it go dry. I date mine with the date of lay.

I write the date on the eggs with a pencil. It's so much easier and as Ma Lowe said, it's not as expensive as food grade ink.

I have a egg skelter so the oldest eggs roll down to the bottom to be used first.

they come in two sizes (for bantam and large fowl eggs) and lots of colours, but if you have an extra large egg these get stuck on the way down so need a little bit of help

I mark mine with a pencil.  Having only just started getting eggs from 2 of them they dont hang around long before they are eaten, but the pencil works well.

I have a skelter thingy for my fruit, as long as the fruits round its great  ;)

I have an egg skelter, but i do also write date on with a pencil.

Friends have commented on my egg skelter as they look quite good when full.

I tried marking my eggs with a date, but like others I find a pencil far more efficient.

I dont like writing on the eggs as when I sell them some people say.... oh its not very fresh is it.... when its only about a week old !!!

I keep mine in 30 egg paper trays and just use the ones from the back first and move them back each day when I add the new ones to the front :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!
