Me again!!

Just wondering, how do people date mark their eggs??

I know we are probably a long way off yet but assuming we get eggs at some time (fingers crossed!!) I wondered what the best way was to date mark them in case we sell/give them away if we end up with too many, we have 5 chooks.

I have looked on the Internet and have seen food grade ink and date stamps etc but was hoping writing on them with a pencil would be fine?

What does anyone else do?

We just use an ordinary pencil to put the date it was laid on! seems to work ok for us

Pencil. easy to purchase  ;)and wont come off easily.

We use any felt tip that is to hand - on the basis that the shell is the packaging and will be discarded!

Info from this site says a piece of tape on the egg box with 'best eaten within 3 weeks' will cover it.
 Make a sloping rack to store the eggs out of two tapered strips of ply with  batten between and at each end for stops,the oldest eggs will always be at the lowest end .

I never mark the ones we sell....They'd never make the 3 week mark

We use any felt tip that is to hand -

I thought FELT TIP INK would penetrate the shell, i'm not saying i'm right. Just what i thought.
My wife occasionaly tells me to stop thinking, so i won't be offended if i am wrong.

I thought the same Sparrowman but I'm not sure either... We use a pencil too

I've been really sad and bought the foot safe in and a date stamp.  The kids enjoy putting the date on the eggs this way

Definitly pencil !

Inky stuff will penetrate the shell and is not food grade like food colourings.

We don't mark the eggs and put "consume within 14 days" on the box just to give a bit more leeway.
But I doubt any have ever made it past a week old. AT the moment we're turning people away from the door because they're all too greedy for them

Do you mind if I ask how much to sell my surplus eggs for? I haven't got a clue how much to ask. I know I won't make much money, but I'd like to know the going rate. Our hens are truely free range, all day. Also, where's the cheapest place to get boxes from, I don't have any old ones as obviously we don't buy eggs!!! Thanks.

Mine aren't proper free range except in the winter when they have the whole garden. I sell the surplus of my "garden eggs from happy hens" for £1 per six. I have regulars and they generally return the boxes, and also provide me with empty supermarket boxes too as I can't keep up with their demands for my eggs - the labels peel off very easily and I have a range of pretty colours.

Flytesofancy boxes are pretty cheap though if you want new ones.
