hoeing horsetail
« on: July 01, 2012, 10:02 »
I've been trying to deal with horsetail coming up from next doors garden with regular hoeing as mentioned in the useful article on here. Am ok to leave the hoed off bits on the soil or must they all be collected and disposed of?

Collect and dispose - you never know!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It is a heck of a long shot but.  .  .

if you bend a bunch of 'leaves' into a container of strong weed killer (while still growing from the ground) and hold them there with a weight, the plant may take up the chemical and croak!

Cheers,    Tony.

My dad has mentioned this....

Try some wallpaper paste mixed with a weedkiller solution.

Bash the leaves to break open the waxy coating and paint the stuff on....

Haven't tried it (yet). The marestail's not reached our plots so far.....

I think I may well have to live with the stuff as you do with most other weeds that appear from time to time.

I presently have a lovely looking, weed-free greenhouse having taken on one that had been left to get on with it for about four years. It was chock-a-block with the stuff.

Problem is the horsetail / mares tail grows up through the lawn in various places. I mow it and it's in with the grass clippings. I don't think I could fish all the bits out.

Anywhere else it gets the hoe and can sit there *shrivelling in the sun (*wishful thinking!!   )
