The mother of all rhubarb plants!
« on: June 06, 2012, 19:59 »
Hi guys,

I am clearing away at my new plot and have never seen such a huge rhubarb plant (roughly a 12ft square).  Is this normal?!

I will be honest, i dont know much about rhubarb but i would like to keep a reasonable sized one and move it from where it is at the moment.

I would appreciate some advice on splitting it as i dont want to kill it off but its just tooooo big.  :)

not sure it is the right of year but to split it just take a spade and dig out the plant an d hack off a bit as big as you want (ensure there are some buds on it and re plant. it is quite difficult to kill

I'd dig it up at that time,  but re-plant it straight away, why keep it out of the ground for 2-3 months?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

apparently the root likes a bit of frost!  I really envy you people I have several plants all have spindly growth despite receiving loads of manure every winter!!  I begin to wonder them people in the triangle sell off their used forced roots to the seed merchants who flog it to us!!

Big thanks for the info ;)

I will try to keep my spade away from it until October...

The only trouble is, is that after clearing a ton of leaves its like Hampshires slug headquarters.  They obviously LOVE rhubarb
