Two new rhubarb plants.
« on: May 15, 2008, 13:12 »
Hello,

I bought two new rhubarb plants for my plot a few weeks ago. Could I get a crop off of them this year? Would I have to 'force' them? How do I do this?

No, most rhubarb plants are at their peak about now.

It's not really the time of year to be planting rhubarb, but you'll just have to stick them in & leave them.

You can only force an established plant early in the year & then you should not crop it the year after.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

OK, I think my post was a little misleading, I planted them in February, but they are still new to me! I just hope I can pick some next year.

Sorry, to hijack your post sharky, but would be grateful if anyone could help.  I put a new rhubarb plant in this spring and it is growing very small leaves (about a 1/4 of the usual size) they then just seem to fade.  Is this normal in the first year?

I have put it somewhere with plenty of sun, its got lots of manure (i put it where the compost bin was last year and gave it plenty of compost remains, made sure it was watered well etc etc etc)

Would be grateful for anyones thoughts

Claire

I transplanted some crowns last year and didn't get much off them but this year I have a rhubarb jungle so I would wait until next year and I'm sure you'll see a big improvement.
