Manure and new shoots
« on: November 04, 2007, 20:31 »
I have just collceted some manure.. thanks for tips, bins worked a treat, no mess!!

Now then.. I spread some over my garlic beds, there are some onions and shallots inthere too.. my question is some of them have little shoots coming through, I know it's early, and they have only been in for 3/4 weeks, but there they were. will the manure hurt the shoots? should I pull the stuff away from touching the shotos or is it all fine?

Thanks

You may have damaged them by applying after shooting (but too late now).  Easier to apply mulch before any shoots appear.  Certainly doesn't trouble garlic to grow through a manure mulch but I seem not to mulch autumn-planted onions.  (I only plant shallots in spring).

I thought it might be a bit iffy, but I took the chance. It's quite a thin layer.. I could get down the lottie tmo, and move it a wee bit.
The stuff in the back garden I could move it away from the shallot shoots first thing in the morning.

Or I could just wait and see!!

If I start up another bed of shallots and onions can I put a layer of amnure on top then plant new sets, or should I dig it in, or should I not bother putting it on the new bed?

Thanks guys, always to the rescue!!

Digging it in will feed the plant better.  Mulching will suppress weeds better.  Both will do both.

I surface mulch only because I plant too big an area of garlic to dig in the manure.

People truly underestimate just how tough garlic really is, same with most onions. I manure and manure mulch mine and if it touches the plants, I don't worry. It's older manure which won't burn. Unless you've nothing else to do, I wouldn't worry about yours Louby.

Thankyou.. I have decided to just see what happens!

I rekon they'll be fine too.. it is very well rotted..
The place I got it was wonderful... in fact I have never seen so much poo!! It looked like a row of houses!! you could pick what kind you wanted, some areas were full of 'clods' and lots of straw, some had straw and thick muddy stuff, but also there were areas with just crumbly muddy stuff.. I took a mixture..
There was also a  Huge steaming pile of very very fresh, yellow in comparison  Manure too... perfect for hot bedding so I'm told! I didn't get any of that. It's there for the taking any time so I'll be back there!
