Pea variety for pea shoots?
« on: July 28, 2012, 08:20 »
Have recently had pea shoots as a veg when out for a meal and was wondering.... Can you use any variety of pea to grow for pea shoots?  (I have lots of seed peas left over and it@s probably too late to attempt growing them for pods here in Lancashire)

Thanks

I don't think it matters  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes
Any variety will do . At the moment I have Hurst Greenshaft on the go. In the past I have grown Batchelors dried peas from the supermarket. All with equal success.

I use Batchelors dried peas- cheapest I have found, and have a disgustingly good germination rate (and actually grow and produce OK peas if forgotten!)

Just remember not to plant the sodium bicarbonate tablet that comes with them!

I have 5 pots of them on the go and the moment!- new pot planted every week!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

What size pot do you use and how many to a pot - I have some peas seeds that I could use but not sure how many to plant and how much room they need. TIA.  :)

i usually plant mne in trays and leave around 1 inch space per seed, they dont need very much room at all, as they are fast growers!

I think this year i put around 60 seeds in a standard tray!

I plant them very thick!!

For a 4 inch pot I will put a big handful, so that its pretty much a solid layer of peas!
then cover them with another handful of soil.

I then normally get 2-3 cuttings from them, they do tend to need a fair bit of watering, but pretty much all the energy for the shoots will be coming from the pea.

I am even nastier sometimes in that I use compost that has been used for something else first, then once I have had the final crop I chuck all the contents into the compost heap ready for next year!

Sorry haven't been on-line since I posted my original question.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond I now have several pots of all the left over peas on the go and am looking forward to some delicious pea shoots...am going to taste test the different varieties to see if there is a noticeable difference.

Thanks again  :)

We had Roast Duck with Pea shoot risotto on Sunday for dinner

Was very nice!

OH thinks I am mad as there are about 6 pots of pea shoots on the go, but he likes them both in salads and cooked. And they have been the most reliable crop this year!
