I've never needed to net lettuce, but you can prevent birds getting tangled in netting if you make sure it's taut, not hanging in loose folds. It would be very sad to lose a sparrow, they are on the endangered list now.

If I try to grow lettuce or beetroot at home the sparrows give them no peace. On my allotment 1/4 mile away neither are ever touched.

Don't have a problem with them attacking unprotected lettuce. Perhaps they're having a laugh playing in the mesh and getting stuck. ::) They're often to be observed jumping through the chicken wire around the veg patch here, apparently just because they can.  :nowink:

I use old video tape some along the rows and some cut abut three feet long tied to a cane say six lengths and let them blow on the breeze . These can be stationed at various parts of the plot and easy moved to get in to weed.

In my garden the sparrows will have a go at anything green. This year it is the turn of the raspberries. I am not sure that they always eat what they destroy as I find bits of raspberry leaves scattered around.

I cant see why they wouldn't attack lettuce as well if they felt like it.

I have helplessly watched a blackbird pull up nearly all my baby lettuce, I was banging on the window but he carried on regardless.  He pulled up each one, dropped it on the soil and moved onto the next! luckily I had plenty more in the greenhouse, I now throw a net over and so far so good
