Blood drops from rear of chicken.
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:06 »
I have three chickens and noticed blood in one of the nesting boxes.  Taking a closer look I noticed a drop of blood coming from the rear of one of the birds.  Any sugestions please.

she could have had an egg break on its way out (and the other girls would have pecked at her rear to get it) so first of all you need to check her carefully to see if all the egg is out. Then you need to stop the bleeding so if you have any wound powder use that but in an emergency corn flour will do (do not use ordinary flour). Then to disguise any redness use some purple spray.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Many thanks for the advice.  I opened the nesting box and the hen that was bleeding was sat in it.  I pushed her out to see what would happen and another hen then started to peck her rear end so you are right.  One further question.  How to I get the bits of egg out?

you can either put on a latex glove smear your finger with vaseline and then try to get it out or pop her in a sink full of warm water and let her relax in it for 40 mins or so. this will ease any cramped up muscles and allow her to relax letting the egg out. Afterwards towel dry her then give her a blow dry with the hairbrush on a warm not hot setting.
