Have just inspected my pet chickens rear end; it looked as if poo had stuck to her about an inch below her vent.  On removing the poo it has revealed a very sore looking and protruding lump about half the size of an egg.  She doesn't seemed at all distressed but I don't know what to do!

I think it is the membrane from her vent that is protruding.

I would be really greatful if anyone has any advice.

Rose

Looks like a prolapse. Put  her on her own....other chickens will peck it and try to eat it!!  If you can gently push it back inside her and keep her contained in a smallish box for example it might stay in. The oly other way is for her to have an anti-inflammatory injection from the vet. I had this happen to one of my girls and she did recover.

Or try Hemorrhoid cream.  It should help a lot too !

the other thing you can give her is something like "anusol" or "preparation H" available from chemists and designed to shrink heamorroids. Apply a little to the vent area and it may help to shrink and tighten the tissues around her vent and keep the prolapse in place.
Good luck with her!

Thank you so much; will do what I can and take her to the vet on Monday as she seems completely unbothered by it!

It has gone done a lot already; should I clean her before applying any cream?

It is definately a prolapse, the  same happend to one of my rhode island reds called lunar. I noticed she had a red swellng coming from her vent. I panicked as Fatty the flock bully was pecking at it and made it bleed. Lunar was distressed and appeared to be in a lot of pain so we took her to the local vet who pushed it back and gave her an anti inflamatory injection. She was fine after this and enjoyed the ride in the car.
