Sweetcorn leaves eaten by cat!
« on: May 11, 2012, 20:46 »
After chitting and planting sweetcorn and feeling quite pleased that the plants looked really healthy, horrors!! this morning as I was putting them out to harden off I realised my delightful cat has eaten the leaves. There does not seem to be any damage to the heart of the plants. Will these plants survive or should I start again.

As the growing centre's still there, they should be OK.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

one of my cats has done the same in the past (as well as lots of other seedlings - they are evil     ) and it depends on the extent of the damage

you can usually tell within a few days which will be okay

My daughter has been growing a tray of (what she calls) 'cat grass'. I asked her why she was growing sweetcorn as it looks so similar. Maybe that is why cats like the sweetcorn plants?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Sweetcorn is a member of the grass family, so it's not suprising!

For those who don't know, this is why cats eat grass:

The growing tips of sweetcorn are lovely and sweet for humans too - I've often wondered why the 'juice bars' that sprang up a few years ago didn't use corn instead of the other grass that they seemed to have growing away on the counter
