Trimming Eaten Leaves On PSB?
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:27 »
Yesterday I liberated my Purple Sprouting Broc from the small jungle that had sprung up around them.

They have been pretty neglected and were left without netting when we put them in just before we went on holiday in June because we had run out of net and time. They got eaten by pigeons while we were away but survived and kept on growing.

They also got ravaged by caterpillars but some bug spray sorted them!

Despite everything they are still happily growing and have plenty of new growth but should I take off the lower leaves that were stripped bare by the caterpillers? Would this make any difference to their growth or am I just thinking too cosmetically here?

I want to make them comforatble and fully netted before Autumn sets in and the pigeons get hungry again! ;)

If they are just a lattice of leaf veins I would remove them. If they have some green areas they will still be useful to the plant.

every couple of weeks I take off any leaves that are yellow and clean up any that have been broken or have fallen off and landed on the floor.    By the time we were picking our PSB this spring there was about 10 inches or so of bare trunk before the leaves started.
