I had a chat with my plot neighbour today and she said there are rats in her compost heap and under the decking. She lost a lot of her crop to them last year. I don't want the same to happen to my veg! I've got one of those rentokill rat boxes where the critter crawls in through the hole and eats poison, then goes away and dies slowly.  I used it a couple of years back in our garden but still noticed holes where the rats were digging under the fence. The poison was those blue granules.

What would you reccommend?  My dog comes with me most days to the plot, and whilst he wouldn't have a clue what to do with a rat if he caught one, I'm hoping that his scent might keep them from being as brave.

Poison in the approved container that you have, althoughif they die under the deck it is going to pong. Wire trap and a humane way to dispatch them.

Electronic traps, it will kill about 20 rats on one set of battery's, cost about £20, but you can use it again and again, fat painless death, and clean as well
