Best ever veg deal
« on: March 17, 2013, 15:10 »
Last summer I was at our local nursery to see if they had any decent hanging basket plants left when I spotted the owner about to chuck out a couple of trays of leek plants that had totally outgrown their containers. They were all about a pencil's thickness and a sad mass of tangled roots. I had loads of leeks already in the ground but couldn't resist these and gave him a quid for the lot.

Once I'd untangled them and discarded the worst of them, I trimmed them back and ended up with about 200 sad looking plants planted in half a dozen rows of well fertilised soil.

What a Godsend. The ones I sowed at the correct time have long-since gone to seed or got split stems and gone tough as old boots. The 200 I salvaged from the nursery have grown into a great crop of leeks all at about 1 - 2 inches diameter and are keeping family and neighbours going with good fresh veg when little else remains from last year's planting.

Anyone else got a similar good luck story?

I got a load of 10cell modules from homebase for free where they had killed off the seedlings if that counts :)
