Lettuce root maggot
« on: May 01, 2012, 13:43 »
My lettuce seems to be constantly killed by the maggot. Had the problem last year and thought it might be a one off but it's happening again despite crop rotation.

Anyone else have problems with this pest?

Thanks

the flies lay their eggs on the neck of the lettuce where it comes through the soil - covering with fleece or enviromesh will stop them doing so.

I wonder if collars, the kind you put round brassicas would also work

Thanks.

Any idea if they're worse in certain months? I seem to remember my lettuces were fine May onwards.
