I know I'm going to regret saying this, but I've never had any problems at all with cukes. I just sow them, they germinate in about 2 days and grow like stink, then spend all year producing more cukes than I can possibly eat :)

grrenhouse or outside in manure or other?

I always start the seeds off inside the house, in a warm spot and with a placky bag over the pot to keep it snuggly. I usually tend to grow outdoor varieties because until I got my new polytunnel this year I only had a very small unheated greenhouse. I did grow indoor cukes in there once or twice but just found it a lot of hassle to keep training them into shape. Nice thing about outdoor cukes is you can just let them scramble wherever they want to grow, though I do prefer to put them where they can climb up something so they're kept away from slugs or damp. I usually put them in growbags. Last year I tried them in a bottomless pot on top of the growbag and that worked really well. This year I am going to do some indoor cukes in my tunnel, because I've got a lot more space to play with now, but I'll also be growing some outdoor cukes because they're nice and easy.

Starting from seed is the easy bit, it's the other bits like growing and watering is confusing me!

When you say growing, do you mean growing on from seedling to grown up plant?

As far as watering is concerned, all you need worry about is keep them moist but not soaked, never let them dry out. And if possible you need to avoid watering from above. It's always best to put the water at the roots, not on top of the plant, because that helps avoid problems with stem rotting or mildews. Do you understand how to do that?

sink a small pot or a halved pop bottle by the side of the plant when you pot on to final large pot.
Then only water into the small pot which will get water to the roots, but keep the stem area dry

Thanks for the unfo,  out of interest does everyone water tomato plants this way, if I water from the top will I guarantee failure?  I've also potted up now.

Not at all, but better to avoid wetting the leaves if at all possible as this can increase the chances of both leaf scorch and blight.

Tomatoes are not nearly as fussy as cukes when it comes to having their stems wet (don't take that as an invitation to grow them as bog plants though!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
