leeks pic
« on: April 13, 2012, 15:02 »
I put my leeks in a seed tray, do they look okay, in hindsight I wished I had put in a deeper tray or just waited to sow direct, which I am gonna do anyway, but can you tell me if they look okay.  They were sown on 9th March so just over a month old.

Thanks
Amanda

they look fine (although its a bit hard to tell from an arial image), leeks stay thin for ages then all of a sudden they fatten up realy quick - just be patient.

We cannot see whether the tray is too shallow as your picture only shows the top!

How deep is it?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i was wondering the same thing, mine are only in 6 cm pots but only about 2''.
these 2 take all my time, whatever is left the veggies get, poor hubby is at the end of the queue.

Yorkie, its about 3".  I watched Johns gardening vid on planting out leeks, he had them in a deep oblong planter, think they have similar at pound shop or Morrisons so i'll get one.  I can also then sow some seeds at the side.

Cheers Amanda

I have successfully planted out leeks which were in a tray about 2" deep.

My concern about transplanting them into a deeper tray is that it will set them back.

Unless you can manage to tap out the whole thing in one piece, and just pop it into the top of compost in a new, bigger container.

Sorry, I'm stuck in Blackpool.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Those should be fine.

I tried both 2" trays, and also transplanted some into deeper trays last year, and both systems produced identical leeks - albeit maturing a bit too early...

I hoiked out the last ones yesterday!

I think the actual planting out is the most important issue for leeks. Some old boys used to trim the roots and the tops before dropping them in the dibbled holes, so I can't see why a deep sowing makes much difference!
