broccoli sowing query
« on: April 13, 2012, 20:16 »
Hi there

Another one ::), I followed Claires allotment on youtube for sowing broccoli, I have put in a tray, and they look lovely and strong, but do I need to repot these, or can they go in the ground, I have run out of pots!  her link is as follows.  I can get more pots though.  wished I had done in modules though and thinned out.

I am querying this  as I was looking at allotment diary about butterfly attacks and noted his were sown in modules.  Here is a pic of mine currently.

They look nice strong plants and should be able to go out, however you need to make sure that you have hardend them off fully first.

And there are plenty of white butterflies and pigeons round here, so I daresay it is the same for you too, so do net them carefully.

Also, puddle them in as deep as their seed leaves and then pull dry soil around the stem, and firm it down.

If they do wilt, don't worry, they usually recover in a day or two

generally i would pot on but they do look decent plants there and id agree should be ok to go out.

Where are they though? Are they outside? If not you need to harden them off for a while before you plant out

You do have a lot though - hope you like a lot of broccoli!!! ;)

We love it!  I understand they grow a big one on the top and then a few at the sides, but not looked into that properly yet!

is it brocolli or calbrese you are growing?

Calbrese is what you normally see sold as brocolli in shops

They look absolutely fine to go out Amanda as long as they been hardened off, plant as deep as possible up to the first true leaves.

Your a bit naughty though leaving them in a seed tray they should have been potted on before now.

It`s perfectly OK to grow them in a seed tray, you just have to be careful to plant them out in the right weather conditions, and it is perfect at the moment, no chance of hot sunshine in the foreseeable future.

Years ago, before the invention of modules, when I grew brassicas in an outdoors seedbed, if it was hot and sunny when they were being transplanted, I placed an upturned flowerpot over each one for a few days to shade them. Worked a treat.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Thanks, I dont want to put the effort in of making all these sowings for them to be attacked by the white butterfly and alike, so I need to build some proper protection.  Will netting be okay until I make some cloches with enviromesh?

Also broccoli are in the same tray on the other side, can these go out too?

Yeah will be fine to both questions (again providing you harden them off)

Just check the plants for any eggs on the underside of the leaves and squish any you see. To be honest i dont cover mine (i know i should but dont) and each season is different. Last year i didnt have any on any of my plants

Whitefly - now thats another story!  >:(

we had one last night and its been cold every night for the last week or two - mine are just outside in trays on a table in the potting area in my garden.

Think i might pot them into individual pots today

I found a link on building a cloche for brassicas protecting against white butterfly, and whitefly, but it was removed... I dont know why as seen a few weblinks on posts, but anyway, I am going to get some of this enviromesh as seems to have good results.  Been ringing garden centres today before I order online but none of them seem to have it.  But I have also had to explain what it is to get past being told they have other nettings.

Thanks
Amanda
