Vivaldi Seed Potatoes.
« on: October 25, 2007, 19:08 »
Hi,
We have been getting a variety of potatoes from our supermarket called 'Vivaldi'.

They are really nice and I want to grow them on my plot next year.
Does anyone know a online retailer that sells Vivaldi?
I have got both the T & M and Sutton's catalogue's and neither sell them.

Any suggestions please?
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Instead of Vivaldi you mean?

I was considering them, but can they be grown as a main crop or at least second early?

I intend to grow Rocket as my first early.

Vivaldi were developed in Lincolnshire by a company only 3 miles from us.  Apparently they were on TV last year and the people who work for the company were up in arms because the TV programme said there was no taste in the new vivaldi potato, (which I haven't tried yet), but the workforce said they are lovely!!!!

But then they would wouldn't they, Grannie, seem to have a bit of an interest as a workforce, not that I 've tried them.

Well, they were soooo incensed by the report that their lovely potatoes which are supposed to be lower in carbs and in calories than many other potatoes, that they all went to London where this awards thingy was being held to complain!

And with the wages around here, you don't do something like that lightly!!!!

Scientists have discovered a tasty "slimmers" potato with more than half the calories of other spuds.

Producers also say the Vivaldi, which has been developed from seed after nine years of research and breeding, also has more than a third less carbohydrate.

Will you rush out and buy the spuds? Tell us in our reader comments below!

Tests by the Allied Laboratory Services show that on average the potato had 26 per cent less carbohydrate and 33 per cent less calories.

But since nutritional values can differ from potato to potato, the Vivaldi can have up to 38 per cent less carbohydrate and 56 per cent fewer calories than other varieties.

In an age when low GI (Glycaemic Index) mania has swept the nation and the humble spud has been pushed aside in favour of low-cal substitutes, the Vivaldi could offer dieters a return to guilt-free snacks, Sainsbury's said.

The Vivaldi was originally developed from seed for its creamy taste by Naturally Best of Lincolnshire.

It has normal levels of vitamin C and other nutrients.

Sainsbury's produce trading manager John Maylam said: "This great-tasting, versatile potato is the perfect solution for those of us who like to watch what we eat - and they taste just as good for those who don't.

"The Vivaldi is still a great source of vitamin C and has all the nutritional value of a regular potato but has far less calories and is lower in carbohydrates."

Sainsbury's is selling the potato as part of its Taste The Difference range.

Must pop up to Swineshead to see if they'll let me try some then Munty!  I haven't seen Vivaldi in Tesco or Morrisons, but then we don't eat a lot of potatoes from shops.

Must try them though and I'll let you know if they are any good!
