Damson suckers
« on: April 08, 2012, 20:54 »
Had my allotment now for just over a year and for all of this time there have been a number a what i thought was assorted fruit bushes near a large old damson tree.

Now though my own research i think have have found out these may be suckers from the Damson tree itself.

What i wanted to know was .

1) should i let them carry on growing, hoping eventually i will get more fruit.
2) Dig them up and move them to another spot, in winter of course , so the area looks tidyer and so i can keep a better eye on them, train them with the hope that they will produce more fruit.

3) use them as rootstock for the main damson tree when i can take cutting or try and find another source of say plum cutting i can graft them too(and yes i know this is done in the winter too :)), this idea does apeal as i try and be quite frugal and the idea of creating my own fruit trees i feel is a good one also it will enable me to practice grafting.

4)Or just get rid of them all as they wont really amount to much :).

If they are suckers they will be from the rootstock and will not come true to whatever has been grafted on to make the tree. They will make suitable stock for grafting so dig up a few when they're dormant and use them like that. And if you have any spare I'll happily pay the postage  :)
