Rhubarb going to seed ?
« on: April 08, 2012, 20:30 »

I've just had a look at one of my Rhubarb plants, and it looks as though it is going to seed.

There is a large bulge coming from the base of the plant ,with pinkish (like beetroot seed)

type  heads ? at the top.

What do I do with this?

Do I take it off, and if they are seeds can I grow more rhubarb from them,or is it easier to

split the crowns.

Have it away.

I mean - chop it off!

Energy from the plant will be diverted to the flower spike.

It's far easier to split crowns, as you suggest.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I had that happen on a one year old plant, so it's nothing to do with age as some folk will tell you. I do what DD does - just rip it off at the base and either bin or compost it (provided seeds haven't actually formed). And keep checking because it's rarely just one seed stalk that comes up.

both mine have done this for the last two years - not sure why but both plants are maybe 4 years old and good growers.

Doesnt seem to affect the yield as i get loads of them.

Just pull them off when you see one forming

Thanks for the advice I'll chop it off tomorrow.

The other 6 plants I've got seem ok at the moment

I think it's more down to the variety, than the age of the plant.

The one I'm referring to we've been pulling for weeks now - we've had 96 sticks off it. It's way ahead of anything on the site, but you have to expect early varieties to flower earlier. It will give up the ghost, as in past years, before others do.
