raspberries suckers
« on: June 10, 2012, 19:31 »
i've got some well estalbished raspberry plants with lots of berrys on the bushes.  There are also lots of what i think are suckers coming from each plant.  Should i remove these now so that the energy goes into the production of decent sized berries.  Any advice appreciated.

thanks

No!

Those suckers are next year's fruiting stems growing now, and if you take them off you'll have nothing next summer

Any that are outside of the area you want them in can be pulled up, but most should stay

I was just about to post a question about raspberry suckers so I hope you don't mind me butting in.

I have 3rd year summer raspberries along my garden fence, they are throwing out loads of suckers - some ideally placed for next year, others seriously close to my lawn! I got my allotment in October and would love to transplant some there - I've been mad busy clearing my plot but have not got around to the area I've planned for my raspberries.  Should I leave the suckers in until autumn and then transplant them or would I be better taking them out now and potting them up?

Thanks

The more new canes ( you are calling them suckers) that the bushes grow, the more fruit you will have.

Just remember to remove the canes that have fruited each year ;)
