Any Comments On B&Q Verve Compost?
« on: April 06, 2012, 12:37 »
I have used all my compost so need to go and buy some more, I don't want any more from WIckes so just had a look at B&Q's offerings, their Verve multi Purpose at £6.98 for 125 litres seems like a fair deal price wise, anyone got any comments regarding it before I go and buy a load?

Thanks in advance :)

PS I did see this on Watchdog last night due to having some peat in it so I already know about this.

This is discussed here:

and has other mentions on the gyo board.

ive been watching the compost thread and TBH all the brands have had mixed reviews - so i would suggest that the only way to know is to buy one!

Thanks for the replies ;)

I have read through the compost thread and although it is mentioned I still cannot make my mind up from the comments if it is worth buying or not, so Matt I agree, I will go and buy one tomorrow and post my thoughts about it maybe even with a picture :)

It does seem good value money wise so fingers crossed.

I'm on my 4th 60ltr bag this year and haven't any complaints about it. At 3 for £10 it'll do for me, although the bags do seem to get smaller year by year.

Lovely that thanks :) That is the exact kind of comment I was hoping for.

Do you have a 'Costco wholesale' near you, and know someone with a card?

They have Westlands M/P compost and a Westlands '4 month'  ??? M/P compost in.

They're (if I remember) around £6 (inc VAT  :D ) for a 100 litre bale.

It's coming to the end of 'thier' season, so I don't know if they may still have some left though.

Hi Goldfinger, Thanks for the tip unfortunately no Costco for miles and miles :( I have to make do with Wickes, Homebase or B&Q and we only got them 3 over the last 3 years!

I am using Westlands seed compost with John Innes and so far this has been brilliant, this compost now is mainly for enriching new raised beds so hopefully the B&Q stuff should be OK.

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

My 125l bag of B&Q multi-purpose for £7 looks very good, very few lumps so far.  I am only using it to line some potato and bean trenches with though!

(FWIW it wasn't branded 'Verve' as I expected from the website, Just B&Q)
Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

Could I ask why you are using potting compost in trenches?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Funnily enough this was on Gardeners World only last night, Monty the Don planted out some early spud after he had dug the trench he lined it with compost, admittedly it was not from a bag it was some they had made on site but anyway, he put the compost in then placed the seed spuds in this then covered the whole thing up.

I don't know if this is a good way of doing things or not but this is what the Don did :)

I suspect that was probably for moisture retention, but I'd not spend good money on potting compost.

Fertiliser is a different matter.

My mum and dad have hit on at B&Q last week, they got three 70 litre bags of B&Q's own compost for just £3 each.

The shop told them they were selling it off so they could 'change over' to this

verve stuff.
