hi folks,
thats the end of our summer for now up in jockland, snow forcast.
so to my query, I have just started digging over an old plot that was a very well kept garden, then was left to grow over.
On digging over the soil I found that underneath the weeds and grass moss.Is what we would call in the north East BRA GRUN, that is good looking top soil.
 unfortunately it is rather too good I think. It is so fine not a stone in it hardly. And it has not had any compost or dung in for a while,
I was wanting to put in some tatties in the bit I have dug, while I dig the rest. But I was wondering if it would be too fine for drainage, I will find out the morra as it is raining now.
Do I need to dig in some sand or will I have to dung it and wait till next season.

If t'wer me, I'd put in some well rotted manure to the potato trench, or some other organic matter, such as compost, even perhaps cut down nettles laid in would help a bit.

It sounds like it is fine silt and needs some organic matter to give the soil better structure.

This will help hold water but not water log the soil.

I would also add something to feed the potatoes, like blood fish and bone or even chicken pellets
