tomatoes in the cold!
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:17 »
I have read that tomatoes don't like the temp below 10dgr's.
Will it kill them if it gets to say 6dgr's or will they just sulk for a while?

I need to move the toms from the house now as there are too many for the windowsills and i was thinking of putting them in the minni greenhouse in the back garden on the west wall!

Do you think they'll survive?

Temp in my glasshouse was 0C last night and you are probably colder than here...........

On a frosty cold night your tomatoes will die! They can turn blue and sulk at 10/12 but should survive, any lower and I think they're in real danger.

I've been watching the high low tempratures on my outdoor thermometer and we havn't had a low temp bellow 5dgr's for around a week now and even then it was only to 4dgr's the couple of weeks before that, and the one in the minni greenhouse has had a low of 8dgr's but a high of 28dgr's.

Not sure what to do as i don't have enough room in the house!
I started them off early as i always do (you know like you say yoo won't like last year)  :nowink:
I blame this site due to the early tomato experiment

Stompty - I am hedging my bets and have sown a batch early that will go into the greenhouse at the weekend but the bulk of my toms I have yet to sow. Those in the greenhouse will hopefully survive and if they thrive that is a bonus but if not I will need to rely on my later ones. How about you putting half into the greenhouse which would free up a bit of space so you could shelter some inside?

do you really think you won't have another really cold night this year? Seriously  ::)

The experiment was just that- an experiment, and I think you've just proved that early sowing doesn't work for you

Hi bigben,

That is such a simple solution
I can't believe i didn't think of it, really i didn't.
I was thinking single mindedly about what to do with them all.

It may well work for me yet Mos  :tongue2:

I found out years ago that they will survive once that turn blue, but that's about all they do!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Put sheets of newspaper over them in the evening. Paper is better than polythene as it absorbs any moisture rather than keeping it on the surface in droplets.
If they are not very large you could put upturned tubs over them.
Keep them on a bench as it may be cooler near the ground.

If you dont have a heated greenhouse, you cant put them out. They will die after going blue. Not really any way around this other than heating the greenhouse or leaving them indoors. If we get some nights that are forecast 8-12 degrees then maybe you could put them out for the odd night to start to get them used to being in there but personnally, i wouldnt without heat.

I've started the in out in out routine with my toms and tender stuff.

They all go outside during the day if there's any sun about to warm the greenhouse, if not they just stay indoors. A faff but simple  :)

I finish work at 4.00am and this morning I was scraping frost off the car windscreen. So I definitely wouldn't put them out without heat.
You could get a cold frame paraffin  heater, if it's only a small area you're heating - quite economical to run.

I think i'll go with bigbens idea of half in and half out.
They'll be in the minni greenhouse so not actually outside although almost  ::)

I've got way more than i need anyhow and only really need half of them but have promised plants to friends and family  :nowink:

I'll se how they fare and let you know  ;)
