Hens, ponds and frogs
« on: March 17, 2012, 08:46 »
I am planning to have a large wildlife pond in my garden, but I am worried about the frogs.  I know from experience that chickens love frogs, and that frogs squeal loudly as they are ripped apart  (sorry to be graphic).

With a pond I am going to have loads more frogs than I have now, particularly when the spawn changes to little frogs and they hop off into the wide world.  Does anyone have experience of this?  Is it a horrific massacre?

Chickens will fight over frogs and it is amazing how far a frog will stretch!!!!!!!!!!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

That's what I was worrying about, I don't think I will be able to cope with all those froggy deaths.  Will maybe need to reconsider the pond idea (I wish I wasn't so soppy!)

My three hens do not show any interest in adult frogs even during the mating frenzy but they would eat tadpoles all day long if they could get to them. I have no doubts that froglets get the same treatment if found.

Your wildlife pond is bound to produce plenty of frogs so unless you have a big flock of hens they will not get them all. :)

My hens also just ignore frogs and don't like slugs either!  ::)

Unfortunately my monsters try and eat them, whatever the size.  I spent last summer rescueing frogs.  Maybe they'll get bored of them, if there's a limitless supply.
