Does anyone have any experience of clipping box back really hard.

I have 2 box balls that are getting too big. Altho they are clipped every year, the gap between them is getting smaller.

They do sometimes get scorched when i clip them but they seem to recover. Could I really go for it this year or would that ruin them forever.

This was last spring, they are each about 4ft in height and width

Old, neglected plants usually respond well to hard pruning in late spring (May) and can be cut back to within 15-30cm (6in-1ft) of the ground

Thats a really helpful page on the RHS site, thanks for that mum. 

After reading the advice above I'm going to chance it and cut right into them this May and hope it works
