Starting beans off in pots
« on: March 06, 2012, 21:24 »
Do you guys generally start all your bean/pea varieties off in pots then plant out when ready?

I have runners, broad, dwarf and climbing french beans and suger snap and kelvedon peas to try this year.

If so can they all be started off now/soon?

Ta

I start off beans in pots, but as you need at least 12 peas for just one foot of row, I'd never find enough pots!

Don't think of starting dwarf beans French and runners yet, as you can't put them out until danger of frost is past.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have broad beans growing and am on the second lot now (first ones are a bit tall for pots but I haven't been bale to get down to the plot to plant them out... they are OK in the garden for a few more days)

Peas are four to a 2ins square module, as are the mange tout first sowing (Too expensive to be mouse food  and I don't gow as many as DD by a long way)

French beans and runners are of course still in their packets

Apart from the runner beans my eldest grand daughter is growing from pods she found in her garden -- htye are now out of their jar of water and in pots, about 2 ins tall. She is quite determined that they will grow on her bedroom windowsill until it is warm enough to plant them out and has even made a foil reflector for them... bless  :D  She is only six though.......

..... I'm waiting to see them wrapped around the lampshade in a few weeks' time   ::)

For peas lengths of old guttering hung up in the greenhouse work for me then just slide em out into a mini trench when ready to plant out,a good watering prior to planting out keeps the compost solid enough to get them in the ground.

Is it best to grow in pots or root trainers?

Peas?  Mini trench?  The two don't go together!
