Long Red Chillies - Variety?
« on: February 26, 2012, 16:47 »
I've just posted a similar question as part of a thread on the recipe section, so apologies for cross-posting.  However, I know this is the right time of year for sowing chillies, so I wanted to glean the information asap so I can get started!  I want to grow some of the long red chillies that are medium hot - I use them in a recipe for chilli jam, which calls for ten (from which you can tell they're not the sort that blow your head off!!).  I'm finding them more and more difficult to find in local Asian stores and they're expensive in the supermarket, so want to grow my own this year ... Any responses gratefully received  :)

There are sooo many chillis which fit that description, but cayenne sprung to my mind too as a good one.
This website has a database of chillis you can search by heat

I'd agree with cayenne.

You can dry these and grind them to make cayenne pepper as well. Jamie uses them in his cheeky chilli chutney  :)

They grow really easily and are prolific fruiters  :)

Most chillies will make a decent jam, I use scotch bonnets a lot because of the fruity flavour, and last year I used naga's, just because they grew well, don't forget that if you are using a hot variety then you can add some fruit to the mixture to bring the heat down to the level you like.
I like using Apples for the pectin and last year I made up a new recipe using a tin of Mango pulp from my local indian grocer, it tasted devine!

The idea of jam is that you make it with stuff you grow. You can't go buying tinned mango to make it, it's just not done  :D

Bet it was delish though  :)

Look around as you can get cayenne seeds relatively cheaply ---named cultivars of cayenne (like Joe's long) can be fiendishly pricy

Premier seeds on ebay do them for 99p for a pack of 100, plus 59p p&p no matter how many packs of seeds you buy. They are very good seed company.
They also have De Arbol, which is a mexican chili often used in salsas, but that grows very big, need a 3ft spacing

Thanks for all these response - I'm fairly certain the ones I've been using have been cayenne, and I've just ordered some seeds from eBay, so will see how I go.  I did find an asian wholesaler who said he could supply the fresh ones in a 2kg box for .... wait for it .... £22!!!!!  If I'm successful in germinating, raising and harvesting my seeds, I think I'll go into business!!
   ???  :D
