Hi HappyValley,

Are you rural or urban? Also a fox is just as likely during the day to take a bird - Although I have heard this is more likely from an urban fox as they are less timid. However, I have had a bird taken at 3pm and I'm rural.
Watchout this time of year this years cubs are on the move -kill or trap another will be along.
Best thing is preventation - I use electric fencing because I know it works!!
reducing areas for foxes to skulk along is important as well as checking for overhanging branches. Digging strong welded mesh into the ground I've heard also stops them digging under. Im sure someone will give you good advice on fencing around the run etc. Good luck!!
Perhaps a sticky on Mr Fox might be useful?

What about a 9mm shotgun (so called garden gun), I had a couple of these when I was younger, fraid my dad took an angle grinder to em when my licence ran out and I didn't renew it (he did for my 12 gauge similarly).

3 bore .9mill is a bit small .it was also called a rook gun ,uses only for rabbits /rats etc .,the largest shot available is 5s  and not many of em in a cartridge .it will work if you pop it behind foxies noggin .

I thought .22 was frowned upon now for use against fox?

I work mate was told that by FAO when his cabinet was inspected.

S'ok tho, i can pop round with a 303 for him :)

In the 1960s it was proved that a 303 bullet fired into the sea from a boat killed a person on the beach over 2 miles away.

It skipped over the surface like a stone thrown so that it bounces or skips several times.

The point is accidents can and do happen.

Fully aware of that, Only used in rural areas with safe distance around.
I know you can never be 100% with any gun, but we can do our upmost.

I'm not 100% on it, just what was said to my mate.
I think it went along the lines that the RSPCA think a .22 is too small a clibre to dispatch a fox humanely. This is just word of mouth tho.
